The National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) is a transformative initiative launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation with the goal of reducing poverty and vulnerability among urban poor households. The mission aims to provide opportunities for self-employment and skilled wage employment, enabling the urban poor to achieve sustainable improvements in their livelihoods. NULM focuses on empowering individuals through skill development, financial inclusion, and access to social security, thereby fostering economic independence and enhancing the quality of life for urban communities.
A core objective of NULM is to enhance the employability of the urban poor by providing them with relevant skills training. The program is designed to equip participants with industry-specific skills that meet the demands of the job market, facilitating their access to gainful employment and self-employment opportunities.
NULM seeks to alleviate poverty by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for urban poor households. Through skill development and capacity building, the program aims to uplift individuals and families out of poverty, enabling them to achieve economic stability and improved living standards.
The mission emphasizes the inclusion of marginalized and vulnerable groups, such as women, differently-abled individuals, and minorities, in the economic mainstream. By providing targeted support and resources, NULM promotes social equity and empowers these groups to participate fully in the economy.
NULM promotes financial inclusion by facilitating access to credit, savings, and insurance for the urban poor. The mission encourages the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and other community-based organizations that can collectively access financial services, thereby strengthening the economic resilience of urban communities.
In the year 2015-16, Quivan successfully trained over 1,500 individuals under the NULM scheme. These participants received industry-recognized certifications upon completing their courses, significantly enhancing their employability and job prospects.
Building on the success of the initial training phase, Quivan set an ambitious target to train more than 4,000 individuals in the year 2016-17. This expansion reflects the growing demand for skilled labor in the sectors covered by NULM and Quivan’s commitment to meeting this demand through quality training programs.
Quivan’s NULM courses are aligned with the needs of various industries, ensuring that participants acquire relevant and up-to-date skills. The focus on sectors such as Plumbing, Construction, Iron & Steel, Capital Goods, and Retail ensures that trainees are well-prepared for employment in these critical areas of the economy.
The training provided by Quivan under NULM has led to positive employment outcomes for many participants. Graduates of the program have secured jobs in their respective fields, contributing to the economic development of their communities and improving their own financial stability.
The National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) represents a significant effort by the Government of India to address the challenges faced by the urban poor. By providing skill development opportunities and fostering economic empowerment, NULM aims to create sustainable livelihoods and reduce poverty in urban areas. Quivan’s active involvement in the implementation of NULM underscores its commitment to supporting the government’s vision of an inclusive and prosperous society. Through its training programs in Uttar Pradesh, Quivan is helping to build a skilled workforce that can drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for urban communities across India.
